Finding Your Way, One Step at a Time: A Conversation with Lea Appleton, Coach and Author of Walking & Wayfinding
Have you ever gone for a walk hoping to clear your head, only to return with a new perspective? In this week's episode of Why Walking Matters, I spoke with coach and author Lea Appleton about her book Walking & Wayfinding: Create Your Own Mindful Practice, One Step at a Time and the many ways walking can help us navigate life's twists and turns. Our conversation explored the idea of wayfinding—not just finding our way on a trail, but finding our way through life's transitions, challenges, and moments of uncertainty.
Lea shared how walking became an important part of her own journey and why meaningful walking experiences don't have to happen on a famous pilgrimage route or a remote mountain trail. Sometimes they begin right outside your front door. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was Lea's reminder to "always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder." In a busy world, walking gives us an opportunity to slow down, pay attention, and notice things we might otherwise miss.
Whether you're looking for clarity, calm, inspiration, or simply a reason to get outside, this episode is a wonderful reminder that sometimes the next step is all you need to find your way forward.
